Lynne’s chocolate orange kiddush loaf with fudge frosting

As requested on this blog by Lisa, here is Lynne’s chocolate orange loaf with fudge frosting. As many of you know, Lynne bakes all the cakes and biscuits for Wimbledon Synagogue kiddushim with love, skill and devotion. Use the comments section at the bottom of the page to tell us which of Lynne’s cakes is your favourite? [personally, it’s the tiffin that makes me go weak at the knees, Ed]. Thanks, Lynne!

Chocolate orange loaf with fudge frosting

This is one of my favourite Kiddush cake recipes and I always make four at a time! My husband is delighted when I make a batch as it means he comes home to a large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice – the recipe requires only the orange zest!

Ingredients list

For the cake:

150g self-raising flour

2tbsp cocoa powder

75g drinking chocolate

125g caster sugar

125g butter or margarine

finely grated zest of one orange

2 large eggs

2 tbsp hot water

2 tbsp cold milk

For the frosting

115g icing sugar

25g butter or margarine

1 level tsp instant coffee granules

1 tbsp hot water
Method (including oven temperatures etc)

-Preheat the oven to 180C (160 if fan oven) 350F, Gas 4

-Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin

-Beat the eggs to blend

-Combine the flour, cocoa powder and drinking chocolate in a bowl

-Cream the butter or margarine until soft, then beat in the caster sugar a little at a time

-Beat in the orange zest followed by the eggs then the hot water

-Stir in the cocoa mixture, alternating with the cold milk

-Spoon into the tin and bake for 40-50 minutes or until firm to the touch

-Leave to cool on a wire rack For the frosting: -Sift the icing sugar into a bowl

-Put the remaining ingredients into a small pan and heat gently, without boiling

-Remove from the heat and pour over the icing sugar -Beat until smooth and spread over top of cake

The cake cuts into ten slices and freezes well
